Expectations Changed My Recovery
Expectations Changed My Recovery
Early in recovery, I had expectations.
I expected people to trust me again.
I expected relationships to heal quickly.
I expected forgiveness.
I expected life to start feeling better because I was finally making better choices.
When those things didn’t happen on my timeline, frustration followed.
Then I tried lowering my expectations.
I told myself, “Don’t expect too much.”
It helped… but not enough.
Because even lowered expectations were still expectations.
If people didn’t respond the way I hoped, I still found myself disappointed. I became impatient. Sometimes I carried resentment. Sometimes I questioned whether all of my hard work was even being noticed.
The hardest part?
Feeling like I couldn’t even show those emotions.
I worried that if I expressed my frustration, people would say,
“There he is.”
As if one emotional moment erased all the work I had done.
Then something changed.
I stopped expecting anything from anyone.
Not because I became cold.
Not because I stopped caring.
Because I realized something profound.
Other people were healing too.
They were trying to rebuild trust after living through my choices. They deserved the same patience I was asking them to have with me.
And more importantly…
My peace couldn’t depend on whether someone else was ready.
Today, the only expectations I have are of myself.
To keep my word.
To honor my responsibilities.
To live with integrity.
To continue becoming the man I want to be.
Everything else is outside my control.
Ironically, the less I expected from others, the more peace I found.
Not because life became easier.
Because I stopped holding other people responsible for my emotional well-being.
That responsibility belongs to me.
And that’s where freedom lives.
Look deeper.
