Identity in Action: Rising from the Rabbit Hole

Real Raw Recovery

For so long, those of us in active addiction had no idea who we truly were.
We thought we did.
Many of us were very successful in what we did — careers, relationships, accomplishments.

But we focused on things outside of us.
Things in clear view.
Never daring to look into the discomfort…
The guilt, shame, fear that we carried to the table.

Some of it existed long before our use, and it was certainly exacerbated as we continued to spiral down the rabbit hole — scratching and crawling just to stay afloat. Until we became tired. Until consequences robbed us of what we thought we were. Then we lost some… or all of it.

So what then?

Still too afraid to search within, we found solace in escape.

Then something happens.
An awakening.
A chance.

We step out of the abyss into a wonderful, bright, beautiful world.
At first, trepid — wondering about the insecurities, the unknown, the truth.
But the steps get bigger and faster, and we realize this journey has taken on a whole new light.

We begin to love ourselves.
Build integrity.
Learn how to love the ones we hold dearly.
Our kindness becomes altruistic and authentic.

We are not afraid anymore.
We smile.
We develop responsibility.
We grasp that we are enough — exactly how we are.

The world slows down.
Situations are handled in a manner we never could have envisioned.

For ourselves, we set boundaries to protect our values and beliefs.
Our experiences place us in a position to help others who are still afraid to take those steps into this wonderful world.

Our presence is quiet — yet strong and confident.
We are not merely members of society.
We are thriving members of that congregation.

We have discovered our IDENTITY.
There is nothing we cannot face with honor and strength.

Be careful, though — that work you have done to transform must become your daily practice, ensuring you never find those keys to that rabbit hole again.

No longer do we feel the need to compare ourselves to others.
Situations no longer dictate our behavior.

Have we arrived?
Not a chance.

We continue on that path — clear, awake, and aware — like a tiger who can see, feel, and foresee pitfalls.

Ask yourself:
Is the unknown any worse than what you are experiencing now?
Are you worth it?

Don’t be afraid.
That world will take you back anytime you choose to let it.

In Strength and Solidarity
